Peter Schulz
- Brewmaster -
Our Brewmaster, Peter Schulz, journey into beer began in 2005 in Engenhahn, Germany, with his soon to be mentor, Christian von der Heide. Brewing small experimental batches on Christian’s 100L pilot system.
In 2006, he gained employment at Russell Brewing Co. in Surrey, BC, Canada, where he first immersed himself in commercial brewing.
In 2007, Peter pursued formal education as an apprenticeship at Weyermann Malt, a renowned institution in Bamberg, Germany, delving into the art and science of beer and malt production. He brewed on a custom built 250L Kaspar Schulz system. This hands-on experience provided him with a deep understanding of the foundational elements of brewing. He furthered his knowledge with an internship at the iconic Guinness Brewery at St. James Gate in Dublin, Ireland, gaining invaluable insights into international brewing practices.
In 2010, Peter pursued higher education at the Technical University of Berlin/Versuchs und Lehranstalt Berlin, achieving the well-recognized title of Diplom Braumeister. This comprehensive program equipped him with a profound understanding of brewing science, technology, and management, enabling him to excel in all aspects of his craft. Seeking to expand his practical knowledge parallel to his post-secondary studies, he gained employment at Schalander Hausbrauerei GmBH.
In 2012, Peter returned to Canada and joined forces with Jorden Foss and James Garbutt to create Steel and Oak Brewing Co. in New Westminster, BC. This was Peter’s first chance to design and plan a brewery from it’s inception.
After a healthy beginning in the very supportive community of New West, where local is king, S&O remains a staple in the Vancouver /Lower Mainland craft beer scene.
With a broad background, our Brewmaster brings a wealth of expertise and a discerning palate to Abandoned Rail Brewing. His dedication to quality, innovation, and pushing the boundaries of flavour is evident in every brew he creates.
